Hunting Information

Amalijek Lodge offers non-resident hunting for Moose, Caribou and Black Bear.

While we will endeavor to accommodate any extra requested individual considerations, our offered hunting package rates include the following:

Dick&George
  • Your Moose/Caribou license.
  • Your flight to and from camp in Newfoundland.
  • Guide service.
  • Your lodging, meals and meat handling.

Meat will be cleaned, quartered, placed in game bags and hung in a screened meat house until flown out with you. Before your departure, your meat will be packed in plastic lined heavy cotton meat bags or if you wish, packed in leak proof cardboard covered styrofoam boxes not exceeding 70 pounds each. These styrofoam box kits are mandatory if travelling by air and cost an extra $40.00 per kit, which includes plastic meat bags and chill packs. Additional meat care, chilling, cutting or packaging can be arranged at extra cost. Beyond the usual care of the antlers and cape (cleaning preserving and wrapping) additional care can be arranged at extra cost for exceptional trophies or as requested by the hunter.

Moose, Caribou and Black Bear hunting season opens in Newfoundland on the second saturday in September and closes the last saturday in November. Moose tags are allocated at fifty percent either sex and fifty percent bulls only. While the choice of Moose taken is yours alone to make, determined only by your license, we encourage all hunters to take bulls and these that are palmated or of ten points and larger only. Caribou tags are for stags only. Our hunting week extends for six days, from Monday through to and including Saturday. Our guests arrive at camp on Sunday and depart the following Sunday. Extended and/or trophy hunting tours can be pre-arranged for an additional cost.

Moose&Caribou Hunting methods consist of still hunting from high ground lookouts, in wooded areas and open country stalking and by canoeing the rivers and steadies. All hunting to date has been with firearms, although hunting by bow and arrow (minimum 45 lbs. pull) and black powder (1500 m.v. and 100 gms.) is perfectly legal. Conditions are excellent for archery and black powder hunting, particularly for caribou. Game has been taken as close as fifty yards and as distant as three to four hundred yards. In the past, notification from us confirming your booking was sufficient documentation to bring firearms or archery equipment to Newfoundland during the hunting season. With the recent change in Canadian Gun Laws you will be required to temporarily register your firearms with Canada Customs. For information 1-800-731-4000.

The rut usually begins intensively around the last week in September, with lots of day long movement of the animals, making good open country and lookout hunting. Around the mid part to the last of October we may have to go into the woods to still hunt the moose, although some movement on the open country still continues. Caribou however, are spending more time in the open barrens at this time. During this period would be a good time to take a decent bull.

Personal gear and sleeping bags should be brought. Most of the traversing and hunting terrain is muskeg which can be dry or wet depending on average seasonal rainfall. Lookouts are usually located on dry barren ground and woodland mixed. Waterproof, preferably rubber, boots should be worn. Temperatures during September and October are moderate but sometimes frost occurs after October 20. Wear layered clothing, which will allow you to be comfortable during cool mornings and evenings and during the warm of midday. We would suggest that you keep all personal gear reasonably within a 75 pound limit. There will be extra flying charges for excess baggage.

Amalijek is a fly-in camp and is located in a total wilderness, undisturbed and has an excellent game population. We operate a single personal service and keep our hunting restricted to three to four weeks (nine to sixteen hunters) per season. All bookings are on a first come first serve basis. Should you wish to hunt at Amalijek, it would be advisable to book your hunt early.

Although our camp can accommodate four clients, I prefer to book only three hunters per week. Application forms will be enclosed for your use along with any information requested in writing, or can be downloaded in Adobe format and printed from our application page. Each prospective hunter should complete one application by filling in his/her personal information only, indicate the tag(s)required, sign and date the form and mail it, along with the deposit, to the address below. The rest will be completed by me.

To book a moose and/or caribou hunting space, an applicant must include the appropriate deposit with each completed application form. You will receive an acknowledgment of your application and a receipt for your deposit by return mail.
