Common species of fish at Amalijek Lake are speckled trout and ounaniche (landlocked salmon). Some clients have caught what they have described as brown trout. Although I haven’t been able to personally confirm that this is the species of fish caught and not the prolific ounaniche, sporting records from earlier this century speak of non-native brown trout being released in some inland waters of Newfoundland and this may will be the species caught.
The period between June 1 and August 15 is reserved for guided sport fishing, hiking, canoeing, camping, venture tours or just plain relaxation. Four individuals per week can be accommodated. The cost of our full service fly-in fishing and/or venture tour is $1650.00 per individual based on a minimum occupancy of two persons. The rates are for a weekend; fly in friday evening and fly out sunday evening, but may be extended to a full week (six days), flying out Friday morning, for an extra $100.00 per day per individual. The rate includes flying in from Conne River, fishing licenses, guide service (one guide per two clients), meals and accommodations.
Depending on his/her requirements, the above rates may be customized at a client's request. We do however, reserve the right to determine minimum operating services and all bookings requesting full service will be given priority over customized minimum service requests. Before a booking can be confirmed we will require a deposit of $650.00 per individual. Fifty percent of the deposit will be forfeited if a booking is cancelled after the six week period prior to the reserved date.
For clients wishing to stream fish, as opposed to lake fish, this option is available on the tributary flowing into Amalijek and on the larger tributary flowing out of Amalijek. Stream fishing is usually done from season opening date May 24 until and including the first week in July. As the water gets warmer, between early July and mid August, lake fishing is usually more productive.
For those more inclined to do river canoeing and camping out and willing to spend a little extra for an added adventure, a short river tributary from Amalijek Lake intercepts a large river on the Keguedek, Jubilee and Medonnagonek lakes system. This river flows through undisturbed wilderness for thirty-eight miles to an area of the southern Newfoundland seacoast which is as undisturbed as the interior. Clients can also canoe for seventy miles farther into the wilderness completing a circuitous route by river and portage back to Amalijek.
Transportation can be arranged to fly to camp on friday evening and return the following friday; or to fly in on monday morning and return the following monday morning or any time in between, providing arrangements do not conflict with other prior arranged bookings.
