Welcome to Amalijek Lodge homepage. Amalijek Lodge is a rustic log cabin, constructed on the birch and spruce forested slopes of Amalijek Lake. I am a citizen of the Mi'kmaq Nation and reside in Miawpukek, (Middle River is its nearest translation in the Anglo language). Miawpukek is located in Taqamkuk, (Newfoundland) Canada.
The picture on your left is of a place where I spend a great deal of my time. In our Mi'kmaq language, this lake is called Amalijek (placid waters). Should one prefer to hike to Amalijek, it can be reached in several days by an enjoyable, meandering, walk from my doorstep. This trek would take one through forest, around lakes, over wetlands and some rocky ridge high ground. This access would follow the route of our grandparents who used this area since time out of memory, and who travelled through the area to reach hunting grounds farther inland. Many of our people still subsist hunt and trap, some parts of this area and this route continues to be traversed in late fall and early winter by some of our current generation of mi'kmaq hunters/trappers who winter farther inland.
For those impatient to enjoy what Amalijek has to offer, it can be accessed by floatplane, only a short flight from Miawpukek. Consisting of a land area of hundreds of square miles, Amalijek is a pristine wilderness, consisting of old growth forest with several interconnecting lakes and rivers of naturally clean, clear and cool waters. While Amalijek abounds with big game animals, for those who prefer not to hunt, in addition to just viewing these animals, the bald eagle, osprey and the loon make their regular visits to the area and are a pleasure to observe in their natural habitant.
Each Autumn clients from the New York and Pennsylvania States return to Amalijek to hunt Moose, Woodland Caribou and Black Bear. This is a photo of Scott Mazzo with a 22 pointer. That fall three generations of Mazzos hunted at Amalijek and all took a moose. Both Scott and his father Jack returned again along with their friend, Ed Hamshner, to hunt at Amalijek in 1998. All three were successful hunters, no antler however matched Scott's from 1994.
Some clients come earlier to try their hand at late Summer fishing. The seventy miles of interconnecting waterways, consisting of rivers and lakes, has excellent fishing and great canoeing, and when conditions provide, white water canoeing can be enjoyed at Amalijek. The area has excellent hiking opportunity provided one doesn't mind traversing a little bit of our northern muskeg to reach high lookout points and solid ground.
